How much do you know about air containers?

Jul 10, 2024

Air containers are designed according to the shape of the aircraft cargo hold to ensure the maximum loading rate of the limited space in the cargo hold. Therefore, some air containers are designed with truncated or rounded corners. The shape of the aircraft is determined by its aerodynamic characteristics. Therefore, air containers can't adopt the same standard. In the air transportation system, air containers are listed as a type of container, and there are many specifications and models of containers carried by aircraft.
There are differences between air containers and international standard containers in terms of box structure and materials used:
① The weight of the air container must be reduced as much as possible, so the material that constitutes the box is mainly aluminum alloy and complies with the provisions of GB/T15140;
② Under the premise of meeting the strength and stiffness requirements, its weight should be reduced as much as possible;
③ The box itself and its internal structure should consider the limit device, including the limit of the cargo in the box and the limit of the box in the cabin;
④ When there is a rapid decompression in the cabin, the box The internal pressure should be able to adapt to the cabin pressure, and the box should have a ventilation area of at least 5 square centimeters/cubic meters;
⑤ The inner and outer surfaces of the box should avoid sharp corners and edges and overly rough surfaces;
⑥ For boxes with fork grooves, the fork inlet and the support seat should be able to transfer the load borne by the base to the lower base, but the pressure borne by the lower base should not exceed 9.55 kPa;
⑦ Handles for manual box shifting should be installed at appropriate locations on the outside of the box, and each handle should be able to withstand a pulling force of 4449 Newtons in any direction.

Types of air containers:
(1) According to the location in the aircraft cabin, they are divided into containers for the main cargo hold and containers for the lower cargo hold.
(2) According to the applicable intermodal transport mode, they are divided into air-land containers and air-land-water containers.
(3) According to the cargo shipped, they are divided into ordinary cargo containers and special cargo containers. The latter include insulated containers and animal containers.
(4) According to the manufacturing materials, they are divided into hard containers and soft containers.
Commonly used air container models
Currently, there are four types of air containers commonly used: AKE containers, AMF containers, AAU containers, and AMA containers.
