What is Aviation Container

An air cargo container is a specially designed and engineered container used for the transportation of goods by air. These containers play a crucial role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and organized handling of cargo during air freight operations.

Advantages of Aviation Container

Enhanced Safety

They provide a secure enclosure for the goods, protecting them from damage, theft, and the elements during transit. The robust construction and locking mechanisms ensure that the cargo remains intact and safe throughout the journey.

Improved Organization and Handling

Containers allow for the efficient organization and consolidation of various goods into a single unit. This simplifies the loading and unloading processes at airports, reducing handling time and minimizing the risk of errors or misplacement.

Increased Efficiency

Standardized sizes and shapes of air cargo containers enable better utilization of the aircraft's cargo space. They can be easily stacked and secured, maximizing the payload and optimizing the use of available volume.

Protection from Environmental Factors

The containers shield the cargo from temperature variations, humidity, and other environmental conditions that could potentially harm the goods, especially for sensitive or perishable items.

Compatibility and Interchangeability

Most air cargo containers are designed to be compatible with different aircraft models and handling systems at airports worldwide. This interchangeability simplifies the transfer and connection of cargo between flights and airlines.

Reduced Risk of Damage

By enclosing the goods, the containers minimize the exposure to external forces and impacts that could cause damage. This leads to fewer claims for damaged cargo and improved customer satisfaction.

Component of air cargo container

Door Body
The body of a cargo door features two vertical hollow leaves, two horizontal C-sections, and a frame consisting of infilled, corrugated steel paneling.
Four drop-forged steel hinges help hold the body at the rear corners of the container. The hinges, also known as blades, allow the door to swing 270 degrees against the container wall.

Lockbox
A lockbox is a protective steel box welded directly onto the door that houses a padlock. It protects the items inside the container from theft, tampering, and break-ins.

Lock Rod and Handle

Each door has two to four vertical lock rods that enable opening, closing, and locking. The lock rod has a welded cam-and-knuckle mechanism, known as the cam keeper. Whenever you open the door, the handle rotates and forces the cam out of the keeper.

Rubber Gaskets

Rubber gaskets close the gap between the door body and the edges of the container. This seal helps prevent water ingress and leakage, keeping contents safe from damage.

Hinge Pins

Door hinges act as pivot points on the door, allowing free rotational movement.
Some containers may also have additional utilities, such as a security swing arm and shackle-puck locks.

How to air cargo container

Inspect the Container Roof
The first step in shipping container maintenance is to inspect the roof of the container thoroughly. If you've purchased a second-hand container, chances are the roof has been dented due to the containers being stacked on top of each other. Deep dents can collect rainwater and lead to corrosion if not addressed.
All it takes is using a hammer and a dolly to fix minor dents on a container roof. Once those have been fixed, check the exterior paint and see if it has cracked or chipped. You want to fix any paint issues on the container to prevent corrosion from occurring. Simply treat the dented area with rustproof paint and you're good to go.

Treat Rusted Areas Immediately
Plenty of shipping container customers trick their customers into believing that shipping containers are rustproof, especially those made from corten steel panels. While corten steel does exhibit higher corrosion-resistant properties compared to other forms of steel, it's not completely rustproof. This type of steel is sensitive to salty air environments and requires treatment to prevent corrosion.
Examine both the interior and exterior of the container and look for areas that have been scuffed, scratched, or cut. Treat these areas immediately by sealing, painting, and rustproofing them before it starts compromising the container.

Lubricate The air cargo container
Shipping containers are pretty straightforward in that they only have a couple of moving parts. This includes the door hinges themselves and these parts require regular cleaning and inspection. First, you want to clean the door hinges by using a commercial-grade steel cleaner. This removes any dirt, rust, and grit that may cause the hinge from getting stuck. You can follow that up by using a lubricating spray (WD-40 works just fine) and applying grease on the cams for smooth hinge movement.
Shipping containers usually have seals and rubber gaskets to create a sealed environment for the goods inside. Usually, gaskets and seals last for around 10 years before they need any replacement. Inspect the condition of these rubbers and replace them immediately if they show any signs of wear and tear. This will create a nice, good seal on the air cargo container to keep out rain, snow, and precipitation from entering inside.

Look For Signs Of Container Modifications
It's not uncommon for shipping containers to be modified in various shapes and forms. Some used containers may be cut to reduce its size and welded back together, which can affect their ability to resist corrosion, dirt, and water. Look for modifications signs on the container like on the joins or metal areas to ensure it's been welded properly and has been repainted and rust-proofed.

Store the Container on a Level Surface
When storing the shipping container, you want to place it on a surface that's as level as possible. What this does is prevent water from collecting on one side of the container and avoid corrosion on its underside. Simply use a spirit level and you'll be able to determine how levelled the surface is. Placing the container on a well-drained area also helps with preventing corrosion when precipitation is present.

Fix the Refrigeration Unit
If you own a refrigerated shipping container (otherwise known as reefers), you should service the refrigeration unit periodically to avoid expensive repairs down the line. In this instance, we recommend having a qualified technician do the repairs for you. They'll diagnose any electrical and mechanical issues with pinpoint accuracy and ensure the interior of the container meets food-grade standards.

Sizes Of Air Cargo Container

Air cargo containers come in various sizes and types to accommodate different types and volumes of goods. They are typically made of lightweight yet durable materials such as aluminum or composite materials to minimize the weight and maximize the payload capacity of the aircraft.

The design of air cargo containers takes into account factors such as strength, stackability, and compatibility with the aircraft's cargo hold systems. They are often equipped with locking mechanisms and tie-down points to secure the cargo inside during flight and prevent movement or damage.

Some common types of air cargo containers include palletized containers, which are built on a pallet base for easy handling with forklifts or conveyor systems, and unit load devices (ULDs) that come in different shapes and sizes to fit specific aircraft models.

These containers are subject to strict international standards and regulations to ensure their safety and reliability. They undergo regular inspections and maintenance to meet the demanding requirements of the aviation industry.

Key Things You Need to Know About Doors

General Points to Consider About Easy Opening Container Doors

The doors on one trip (new) shipping containers are pretty much always easier to use than the door on used shipping containers.
Ensuring your container is sited well at the point of delivery can make a big difference to how easy the doors are to operate.
All the containers we sell are checked and repaired by industry professionals. If you are buying privately (via eBay or similar) we strongly recommend you check any containers in advance of buying. Door gaskets, and occasionally, hinges do wear, can be damaged and wear/break over time, a broken door gasket or hinge can make a container door near impossible to close.
For used and refurbished quality shipping containers, we do also offer our fabricated flat panel door option. This is a very different build to the doors described in the article, but this can offer a different easy to use option if you are worried about stiff doors on used shipping containers.

Before Purchasing / Choosing The Right Type of Container Door for Your Needs

Obviously the first person to help you will be your sales contact – the person helping you to select the right shipping container for your needs. Ask them questions, let them know your situation (how you intend to use the shipping container, who will be using it) and ask for their opinion. Yes plenty of salespeople want a sale, but the vast majority of reputable traders will try to be fair to you. If you aren't happy with the product it will only reflect badly on them. This is great for any aspect of the shipping container you may have questions on, not just the doors.
Request a viewing. Sometimes this can be very hard or impossible, if for example the containers are stored in a yard that won't allow the general public in. However most traders will try to help where they can. If we aren't able to offer a viewing on your exact container, we will try to make available one of the same grade or specification for you to see.

After Purchasing Your Shipping Container

Always ensure you have read any guidance sent through from your supplier well in advance of delivery.
Your shipping container should be level and supported on its 4 base corners. A common issue is 'racking'. When a container 'racks', it twists a little, the door frame shifts slightly and is no longer square. You are now trying to close square doors into an off square door frame and the doors will be extremely stiff, or they will jam open or closed. This is the most common issue we see from deliveries so we cannot understate the importance of this.
Grease or oil your hinges every 1-2 years for best results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do container doors work?

A: The handles are connected to two lockrods which run from the top to the bottom of the container. At both ends of the lockrods, you'll find a cam and a keeper. In order to unlock the door, you need to dis-engage these. Gently lift the handles and pull them out towards you.

Q: What are shipping container doors called?

A: Cargo doors are heavy-duty, weather-tight, and secure swinging doors located at the end of a container. They use a cam and lock system which ensures that the contents inside the container are protected against theft and environmental threats.

Q: How many doors does a container have?

A: Shipping containers come in varying designs and sizes. Most of these boxes have a double door on one end. However, we have a special type of storage box called a double-door shipping container. Double-door shipping containers have two sets of double doors, one on each end.

Q: What is side door containers?

A: Side Door Containers, as the name suggests, have doors on the longer side of the container. Unlike the containers with doors only at the shorter end, these containers have 2 pairs of doors: normal doors along the breadth and specialized doors along the length.

Q: What is a door to door container?

A: Door-to-door shipping is a service where the freight forwarder guarantees that the goods will be picked up from and delivered to the locations decided by the end customer.

Q: Do shipping containers have two doors?

A: Double door containers, or tunnel containers have doors that open on both ends. These are useful for loading when space is tight and you need access to the container if they are stacked together. Doors are lockable on both ends.

Q: How heavy is a shipping container door?

A: How much does a shipping container door weigh? Shipping container doors typically vary in weight depending on the size of the container. Standard ISO containers with double-door access weigh around 150kg each. The bigger the container and door size, the more they will weigh.

Q: How to secure shipping container doors?

A: When using just a padlock to lock up your shipping container, it's best to use a closed or concealed shackle padlock, diskus style padlock, monoblock or bolt lock. This stops the most obvious bolt cutter attacks, as it hides the shackle from hacksaws and hinders leverage attacks.

Q: Do shipping containers come with side doors?

A: Side opening shipping containers are modified containers that make it easier to access your goods and stored items via additional doors positioned on the side. They come standard in a 20 foot size, with a side opening 40 foot modified shipping container also available upon request.

Q: Why are containers expensive?

A: The price of shipping containers has vastly increased compared to previous years. Six months into 2021, container prices remain high due to a series of unprecedented global events. These global factors have created a domino effect causing a shortage of available containers. This in turn has caused increased prices.

Q: Why do containers fail?

A: The deployment will fail if the container image specified in your deployment is unavailable or cannot be pulled. Configuration issues: It may fail if your deployment is not configured correctly. An example of a configuration issue is not setting environment variables or putting the wrong ones.

Q: Why are containers better?

A: Compared to server or machine virtualization approaches, however, containers do not contain operating system images. This makes them more lightweight and portable, with significantly less overhead. In larger application deployments, multiple containers may be deployed as one or more container clusters.

Q: What is a container door move?

A: This means the carrier will start handling your container from the origin port and complete their handling process by delivering the cargo to your warehouse or distribution center.

Q: How do you secure a container door?

A: Two types of padlocks are commonly available. Both of these are excellent options for securing your storage door. The CISA container padlock is the industry standard, while the Squire padlock, made in the United Kingdom, is another option. CISA container padlocks are nickel-plated and made of solid steel.

Q: Why is my shipping container door not closing?

A: This is a regular problem with shipping containers; the industry term is 'racked'. The cause of the door/s not closing is because the container isn't sitting flat, which is different to being 'level'. The container can be placed on a slope & it will open & close easily as long as the surface it is sitting on is flat.

Q: How to close a shipping container door?

A: Start to Close the Left door of the Shipping Container Firmly and Securely. Pull the locking bar handles on the outside of the metal container away from the door towards you. Push the cargo door closed and make sure that all of the latches and bars are properly aligned.
