On October 31, 2025, the 6th Corporate ESG Forum and "Zhiyuan Award" Ceremony, hosted by Cailian Press, was held in Beijing. Haikou Meilan International Airport (hereinafter referred to as Meilan Airport), a subsidiary of Hainan Holdings, successfully won the "ESG Pioneer Award" for its outstanding practices and achievements in the fields of Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG), becoming a benchmark for sustainable development in the air transport industry and demonstrating its responsibility and value leadership as a core transportation hub of the Hainan Free Trade Port.
The "Zhiyuan Award" selection focused on "driving industrial value leaps and activating new engines for high-quality development," bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, financial institutions, and think tank experts. Through rigorous multi-dimensional review, it selected companies that excelled in ESG strategy implementation and value creation. Meilan Airport's award is a high recognition from the industry for its deep integration of ESG into strategic operations and its empowerment of high-quality airport construction with sustainable development concepts.
Green Development Leads the Way, Strengthening the Foundation of Ecological and Environmental Protection
As the first SKYTRAX five-star airport in mainland China, Meilan Airport has always prioritized environmental responsibility, taking concrete measures to promote low-carbon transformation. In 2024, the airport's total greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 5.83% compared to 2023. Despite a 10.48% year-on-year increase in passenger throughput, the average electricity consumption per passenger in the terminal building decreased by 18.60% year-on-year, demonstrating significant energy-saving achievements.
Regarding green energy utilization, the airport achieved its "14th Five-Year Plan" target of renewable energy accounting for no less than 3% ahead of schedule, reaching 5.1% in 2024. The completed 1MW photovoltaic power station generates approximately 1.5 million kWh of electricity annually, reducing carbon emissions by 835.2 tons per year. Simultaneously, it completed 5 million kWh of green electricity trading, continuously expanding the application scenarios of clean energy.
The airport's innovative environmental protection practices have also yielded numerous highlights: The second phase of the airport apron has completed LED energy-saving upgrades for 66 high-mast lights, achieving an energy saving rate of 65% and possessing intelligent control functions, saving approximately 276 kWh of electricity daily; a smart energy platform monitors nearly 3,000 meters and 40,000 data points, accurately identifying energy-saving potential; a greywater reuse system has been established, saving approximately 1.5 million tons of water in 2024; and the APU replacement facility utilization rate has remained at 100%, effectively reducing exhaust emissions.
Deepening Social Responsibility and Practicing the Concept of Inclusive Development
For many years, Meilan Airport has actively participated in social welfare undertakings. In the field of public welfare assistance, it has continuously deepened its efforts in rural revitalization, supporting infrastructure renovation in Liangfeng Village, Dongge Town, Wenchang City, solving irrigation problems for over 600 mu of farmland and addressing seawater intrusion issues; and selecting key personnel to serve as the first secretary stationed in the village, assisting rural development through joint Party building, employment assistance, and agricultural product production and sales connections. Meanwhile, the airport regularly organizes voluntary blood donation drives. From 2022 to 2024, a total of 953 employees participated in blood donation, contributing over 236,000 milliliters of blood and injecting warmth into public welfare.
Regarding industry contributions, the airport actively participates in the formulation of national standards, leading or participating in the drafting of several national and industry standards, including "Principles and Requirements for the Setting of Public Information Orientation Systems Part 2: Civil Airports," using its professional expertise to promote the standardization and normalization of industry services.
Improving the Governance System to Solidify Sustainable Development Guarantees
Meilan Airport has established a comprehensive ESG governance system, clearly defining the responsibilities and reporting mechanisms at each level to ensure the effectiveness of ESG risk management, target implementation, and work plan execution. Through annual specialized training for directors on topics such as climate change and business ethics, the airport continuously enhances its ESG governance capabilities.
In terms of service quality and operational efficiency, Meilan Airport, guided by the "Four Orientations" service improvement concept, has established a "1+N" five-star service standard. On October 15, 2025, it launched its new service brand, "Meilan Journey," with the slogan "Five-Star Meilan, Passengers Experience Beauty," aiming to create a new air travel experience that is "innovative and efficient, convenient and accessible, warm and thoughtful, and comfortable and enjoyable." In 2024, Meilan Airport's on-time departure rate was 91.84%, nearly 2 percentage points higher than the national average for airports handling over 10 million passengers annually. Its average departure taxiing time has ranked first among 21 multi-runway airports nationwide for three consecutive years. Meanwhile, the newly upgraded international transit area has been put into use, providing hardware support for building a multi-mode route network including "domestic via Haikou to international," "international via Haikou to domestic," and "international via Haikou to international."
In the future, Meilan Airport will continue to promote the spirit of "hard work, pursuit of excellence, and service to Hainan" of Hainan Enterprises Group, further deepen the implementation of the ESG strategy, and make continuous efforts in areas such as green and low-carbon development, social responsibility, and corporate governance. With higher standards of sustainable development practices, it will build a regional aviation gateway hub facing the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and provide better transportation support for the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port.
